I'm coming down like a wrecking ball

How did I not know Free Comic Book Day was Saturday? I managed to blunder my way into a throng of people at my local store at around 12:30 in the afternoon while I was trying to find a refuge from the throngs of people every where else. Oh well, it all worked out to my advantage as due to the expected influx of people my LCS was running a sale on some of their trades and hardcovers. I ended up picking up the first two Hulk Visionaries by Peter David books and the second trade of the Flash (you know, the one where Bart Allen died for some inane editorially mandated reason), along with the Hawkgirl: Return of Hawkman trade. I hated the few issues of Hawkgirl I'd read when it rebooted post Infinite Crisis but I like Simonson, particularly when he's handling the art. Lets just say that purchase didn't pan out so well. Man does that book suck.

Anyway, while at the shop I also grabbed the Thor: Ages of Thunder "one shot" (it's not really a one shot if the story is continued in the next "one shot" guys) and the most recent issue of She Hulk. I stopped buying She Hulk back toward the end of Slott's tenure on it and I never got around to picking up an issue once David came on board. I wasn't missing anything if this issue is indicative of the quality of the series with him at the helm. First of all, it's not funny anymore. I don't know how David can be writing something like this while simultaneously turning out the wonderful X-Factor but he is managing it some how. Secondly, the characters seem bland and stale and frankly have no personality. Especially the skrull chick who used to be married to Johnny Storm (this is that same skrull correct?) and even Shulkie herself seems void of the personality and charm that have always been present in this title. Third, my gosh the story here was boring. Like a superhero version of that Dog the Bounty Hunter show. Or actually now that I think of it, like a bad episode of the old Hulk show. At any rate, I doubt I'll be picking up another issue of this book.

Thor Ages of Thunder was a nice read though. Fraction's style of writing really set a cool, mythical tone and at times reminded me a great deal of Simonson's run on the title. The art was awesome. I don't know that I've ever seen this Zircher guy's pencils before but he draws one mean looking frost giant and a heck of an imposing Thor. Actually if I had one complaint it might be the characterization of Thor as basically a god version of Conan complete with a bed filled with half naked women. Weird. Oh well.

Hey, I saw Iron Man. Liked it. Didn't love it but thought it was pretty swell. I'm looking forward to a sequel.
